Hi everyone, this is Susan. When I first came to Australia, I only knew the alphabet and the phrase “What’s your name?”. That was about it. My mum and dad couldn’t speak English either, so they were really worried. But me? I didn’t worry at all. I think I was just happy.
Everything felt new and exciting. The sky was so blue, the trees were everywhere, and there weren’t many people around—it felt peaceful. What I remember most is how kind Australians were back then.
People used to ask me the same question all the time:“Do you love Australia?”At first, I thought it was a funny question. But later I realized, it wasn’t about testing me or being rude—it was their way of saying, “Thank you for coming. We’re happy you’re here.”
That warmth really stayed with me.Even though I couldn’t speak the language, I never felt left out.At language school, we talked with gestures and laughter, and somehow, our English started to grow naturally.
Now, Sydney feels busier and more crowded than before, but back then… it was calm, kind, and full of sunshine. And to me, Australia felt like home from the very beginning.
